Occupying a prized portion of Houston’s growing northwest corridor is the residential development between Highways 249 and I-45 known as the Champions area - named after the first large-scale subdivision built there almost five decades ago.

     Settled by farmers and ranchers during the middle of the 19th century, it was originally a rural area rich in agriculture and timberland. It remained largely undeveloped for the next one hundred years. But, during the 1960s, the development of the Champions subdivision, and the opening of the large Bush Intercontinental Airport, brought the region to the public’s attention. 

     Developed primarily as a golf community, Champions first attracted people who came out to the country to retire and play. Over the years, Champions Golf Club, opened by Jackie Burke and Jimmie Demaret and celebrating its 50th anniversary in the fall of 2007, has hosted many golf tournaments and famous personalities. In fact, the cottages across from the Club house are known as the Celebrity Cottages because so many past celebrities (such as Bing Crosby, Phil Harris, etc.) stayed there on their many visits to play the Champions Courses.

     Champions North surrounds the world-famous Cypress Creek course and Champions South is built around the Jack Rabbit Course. Nearby are two other renowned private courses at Raveneaux Country Club and Northgate Forest.

     By the 70’s, the area had built up considerably and through the years the country lane once known as Jack Rabbit Road has become the bustling commercial thoroughfare FM 1960. Shopping is excellent at nearby Willowbrook Mall and Champions Village and downtown Houston is a short commute thanks to convenient access via FM 1960, I 45, Beltway 8 and Highway 249.

     Like many of Houston’s in-town neighborhoods, Champions is in a transition period. The majority of the area’s residents live in single-family homes in beautifully wooded subdivisions built primarily in the 1960s and 70s. But, as the original residents have moved on, the Champions area has become increasingly popular with empty nesters, urban professionals and young families.

     Homes on the golf courses are being torn down and mansions built in their place, while other homes are being renovated with updated features. The result is an abundance of styles and price ranges. But, regardless of the type of housing, virtually all homes feature neighborhood or community amenities for park space, swimming, tennis or golf that take advantage of the natural beauty, forested land and lush terrain that attracted the Champions’ original developers.
